Hip Chick Zine Launches "Anti-Plastic Bag Project"

Hip Chick Zine is excited to announce the launch of our "Anti-Plastic Bag Project." We have always been strong environmentalists, and we are excited to present our educational project to bring awareness to the problems with plastic (and paper) bags. We will be selling ChicoBags, which are hip, reusable shopping bags. The best part is that they come in a pouch that easily fits into your purse (or even pocket!). Prices of the three styles range from $5-$9. E-mail us for more information/to purchase the bags (1/2 the money will go to support HCZ and our future projects!).

Some Quick Notes on Why You Should Bring Bags With You to the Store:
* One million plastic bags PER MINUTE are used worldwide.
* 100 billion plastic shopping bags are used annually in the USA alone. An estimated 12 million barrels of oil are required to make that many plastic bags. (estimated cost to retailers is $4 billion)
* Hundreds of sea turtles, whales and other sea creatures die EVERY YEAR from eating discarded plastic bags mistaken for food.
* The AVERAGE FAMILY accumulates 60 plastic bags in only four trips to the grocery store.
* 500 plastic bags: The AVERAGE number of plastic bags ONE PERSON uses each year in the U.S.

Are these numbers shocking? Bringing your own bags to the supermarket (and other stores) is ONE SIMPLE WAY you can help the environment, with minimal impact on your everyday life.

BOOK WE LOVE: style, naturally

Style, Naturally: The Savvy Shopping Guide to Sustainable Fashion and Beauty by Summer Rayne Oakes (Chronicle Books) is a permanent fixture on my desk (and let me tell you, that's a competitive spot). Summer Rayne Oakes, fashion model, eco advocate, and resident expert on Treehugger.com and the Discovery Network's Planet Green, shares her fresh, fun and authentic take on eco-fashion, proving it's not an oxymoron. Breaking the book into sections such as "Bags," "Denim," and "Face," while including columns like "Designer Profile" and "Eco-Stylephile," the author makes it simple to find exactly what you're looking for. Summer Rayne introduces her reader to up-and-coming designers, and presents innovative, environmentally-friendly steps being taken by more established brands. With the immense popularity of the green movement, this book was published at the right time, but it proves that sustainable fashion and beauty is not just a fad; it's here to stay!

BOOK WE LOVE: THIS IS WHO I AM

THIS IS WHO I AM by Rosanne Olson (Artisan Publishing) is a very powerful hardcover book that celebrates women's unique bodies and beauty. At first glance, THIS IS WHO I AM looks like a photo book of women of all shapes and sizes. However, after reading just one of the stories, you realize how incredible this book really is. Each woman writes candidly about her body, and the pain and struggle of overcoming disease, obesity, or sexual abuse. Olson's project runs deeper than just taking a picture and pairing it with a shallow caption. The words from the women who beautifully grace the pages share their true feelings; their true selves. Such beauty and inspiring, and sometimes heart-breaking, words can easily bring the most stoic reader to tears.

THIS IS WHO I AM will challenge how you view your own body, and the bodies of others. It is a celebration of real women, real bodies, and the unshakable strength and beauty of womankind! Hip Chick Zine gives this book 5 stars!
